Have a pool? Part of the swim team? Did you know that prolonged exposure to water found in pools can cause problems from your teeth? It’s true. For avid swimmers, dental erosion may occur leaving white spots to form on front teeth.
But not to worry. There are several ways to protect your teeth from the sometimes damaging side effects of chlorine to teeth.
If you or your family own a pool, make sure that a parent or pool expert checks the pH balance of the water on a weekly basis to keep it neutral.
If you swim competitively or plan to spend more time in water than on land this summer, just be sure to take all the precautionary steps to prevent damage to your teeth caused by pool water.
These steps include:
1. Brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush after each meal, in the morning & before bed
2. Using a toothpaste designed for enamel health to keep teeth strong and clean
3. Having regularly scheduled cleanings with your dentist, and for braces wearers, attending scheduled appointments with Dr. Goldberg & Dr. Perelmuter.
So, if you find yourself in a pool this summer, think about the many ways you can and should protect that gorgeous smile of yours! And as always, feel free to reach out to the doctors & staff at Perelmuter & Goldberg Orthodontics with any questions you may have…We’re happy to help!
Have a Great & Safe Summer everyone!
